A Brief Introduction to Thinking of Liberty.
Thinking of Liberty is the SubStack of collected thoughts by a modern American Patriot. I’ve taken the name Rough Hewer as a pseudonym. The original Rough Hewer was Abraham Yates, Jr., who was a patriot and pamphleteer during the American Revolution. He was a staunch Anti-Federalist, writing under the name Rough Hewer (along with his nephew) in his opposition to Federalists such as Alexander Hamilton. Quite frankly, he was a bit of a bastard that staunchly believed in limited government and individual freedom.
In today’s world he’d certainly be a libertarian thinker and certainly a populist. He was vehemently opposed to the oppression he witnessed by the British monarchy and their rule in the colonies, and wasn’t much fond of the “elite” of the time — large land owners that were more akin to landed gentry than the local business owner and farmer. He voted against the US Constitution because he felt that it’d give too much power to a central, uncaring, relentless big “G” Government (wow, he was right!).
Yates is mostly forgotten by history but he played a role in the most important part of our history — the formation and development of how we govern. He was staunch supporter of freedom and liberty.
Yates, and thus Rough Hewer, is very much the type of person I aspire to be. A contrarian that asks the “why” anytime government comes to “assist.”
I’ll be writing my thoughts. On freedom, liberty, government encroachment, and more. Obviously, in today’s world Covid has much to do with this, so I’ll touch upon that as well. There are some amazing writers leading on the Covid front, so don’t expect details they provide — rather, I’ll link to people smarter than me for that. But I’m a voice, standing up, and welcome you joining this journey.
I am hopeful you’ll engage with me. Teach me and educate me and I’ll do my best to offer some insight as well. On with the show.
